tamara

back of the red ford mustang

you were telling me about

how much you want to be like me

cowboy boots and fancy pink dress

baywatch barbie tight in your

little hands point to the horses

on the farm whizzing by so fast

and you tell me all your names

for them and inside i laugh quietly,

knowing it took you until you were

all of four to realize that both of us

have the same red hair and freckles.

Personal poetry. This one is written after a moment in the car with my cousin's 4-year-old child. It is an observation of the attention span differences and its relationship in communication between an adult and a child. "baywatch barbie" was the name she had chosen for her doll.
